Hg speciation analysis of inorganic Hg and methylated forms of Hg in water and solid samples are made by species specific isotope dilution – gas chromatography (Thermo) coupled to a sector field ICP-MS (Thermo Element-XR). Solid samples are soft-extracted by open-focused micro-wave (CEM Discover). Solid and water samples are subsequently spiked an extracted after ethylation/propylation into hexane.
Our methyl-Hg detection limits for sea water are 10 fM.
