Optimization of acquisition and data reduction for LA-ICP-MS analysis of zircon: Tricks and new tools of the trade.

This talk will include a brief review of the field of U-Pb geochronology of zircon, particularly as it relates to laser ablation ICP-MS analysis thereof.  I will describe the analytical hardware at UC Santa Cruz as well as the products of a multi-year effort to improve data acquisition efficiency and quality, data reduction techniques and improved analytical throughput.  The effect of standardization with variably radiation standards will be discussed.  Finally, I will present a few examples of developing LA-ICP-MS analytical techniques that have the potential to expand the utility of high-throughput zircon U-Pb data for tectonic analysis.
